"What Speed Do I Need?"

Speeds are expressed in terms of download speeds (what you take from someone else through the Internet into your computer) and upload speeds (what you take from your computer and send out to someone else through the Internet). Other things besides transmission speeds can affect actual speed, but generally the more bits per second, the faster the information flows. For example, a 1.5Mb/256K connection is capable of downloading information from the Internet to your computer at 1.5 million bits per second and sending out information (uploading) at up to 256,000 bits per second. Most residential Internet customers download more information than they send out, so they will be more interested in the download speeds. Conversely, most business customers send out more information than they receive, so their primary interest will be the upload speeds.
