WHAT IS "DIAL-UP?"
"Dial-up"
utilizes a telephone modem that is installed inside or attached to your
computer. Using your existing phone line (or a dedicated modem line, if
you prefer), a telephone modem is used to "dial up" an access
point to the Internet. A newer technology is now available called "High
Speed" access which is, as the name implies, much faster than dial-up.
Because dial-up costs less than High-Speed, it may be most suitable for
beginners. However, once people become familiar with using the Internet,
they usually prefer High
Speed access.
