"Dial–up" utilizes a telephone modem that is installed inside or attached to your computer. Using your existing phone line (or a dedicated modem line, if you prefer), a telephone modem is used to "dial up" an access point to the Internet. A newer technology is now available called "High–Speed" access which is, as the name implies, much faster than dial–up. Because dial–up costs less than High–Speed, it may be most suitable for beginners. However, once people become familiar with using the Internet, they usually prefer High–Speed access.
